The other day, I was able to get together with some friends that I haven't seen for quite some time for the express purpose of playing some games. Back in the day, when we were able to hang out more often, our "game of choice" (if you will) was Carcassonne. And though there are many, many, many expansions to this game, since it had been literally years since we played it, we decided to just go with the base game plus "The River" expansion(s)*.
After two games of Carcassonne, I introduced the group to a simple - but fun - card games I discovered back in the early Eighties call "Naval War". Naval War has (2) card decks - a ships deck and an action deck. The ship deck contains a number of various ships from WWII and uses the actual silhouettes for the ships on the cards. Each non-aircraft carrier has a specific gun size, ranging from 11-inches to 18-inches. In the action deck are "salvo" (and other) cards. The basic play is that you must hold a salvo card of the same size as one of the ships in your fleet in order to use it. Aircraft carriers can, in lieu of playing an action card, designate a target and roll a die** to try and sink the ship. The objective is to sink as many ships as you can.
We ended up playing two games† of Naval War - so a total of four games before we called it an afternoon. A good time was had by all. We're hoping to setup another gaming session "SOON"™.

* There are actually (2) River expansions; we played one game with each.
** "Dice" is plural; "die" is singular. One of my pet-peeves is when people say "roll a dice". Oh, and it was a standard D6 (for those who are familiar with polyhedral dice).
† OK, OK - it was really two rounds, not two "full" games. It was still fun.
