Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!
So just a quick post about a minor change here at Chez CR. I went ahead and enabled "https" redirecting. What does that mean? I have no idea...
Well, OK, I do have some idea (hehehe). What it does is this: when someone enters the 'standard' non-'secure' http URL to this site (i.e. http://chezcr.blogspot.com), they will automatically and magically be transported to another world where the sky is purple and...I mean, they will be redirected to the 'secure' website of httpS://chezcr.blogspot.com. But there was a minor issue in doing so.
I actually enable the redirect just before publishing my 100th post. And upon publishing it, I immediately noticed that Disqus did not show up anymore. A quick Google search (Bing sucks!) and low and behold there was some info on how to fix that. Now, theoretically, I did not need to change anything manually, as Disqus was supposed to include "universal" code for https redirect automatically for all installs AFTER March 6, 2013. "In theory"; I created this site (OK, OK - Blogger created the site when I opened the 'account') in May of 2013 and I didn't install Disqus until June 9, 2014. Yet, Disqus did not show up.
Now, it is possible that I just didn't give it enough time. Somewhere in some other article it mentions something about taking up to 24-hours to migrate things over. But with my 100th post being up and knowing that I was going to be mentioned in the DDO Chronicle ('cuz I asked, which is uncharacteristic of me, but hey! it was post 100...), I went ahead and made the change manually in the html code of this blog so that (hopefully) people could leave comments right away and not have to wait. And once I did make that change*, Disqus immediately showed up again. (Whew!)
But, I noticed I seemed to have "lost" all of my previous comments. Hmmm...another quick Google search (Bing still sucks!) and low and behold, another solution is found. It seems that Disqus treats http and https as two separate domains, even if they are the "same page" 'cuz, well, they ARE actually two different domains (technically speaking). But Disqus has some nice migration tools to help move things when URL changes are made, even if it's just "https". So, export, modify, import and voilĂ ! Now, I know that this one definitely said it could take up to 24-hours to migrate everything, but I saw results right away and old comments were restored (well, technically I suppose they were moved, but that's just semantics).
So, what does all of that mean to you? Probably nothing. Except now you are using a 'secure' URL when you visit here. Unless I link some non-secure URLs, which may happen, from time-to-time. Actually, since most of my links are opened in a new tab, I have no idea if that has any bearing whatsoever. Well, I suppose if any of you experience 'strange' behavior on this site, you can leave a comment and let me know....if you can.
Of course, probably not much I can do about it, but you can always tell me...maybe.

* Since I was already making changes in the html code of my template, I went ahead and added the little bit of code that should allow Disqus to also show-up in Blogger's default mobile layout, should I ever revert back to it. Which I haven't done...yet.
